About CLP Pulse

CLP Pulse is the revitalised clock tower which formed part of CLP's Head Office for more than seven decades from 1940 to 2012. The building is not only a symbol of the company whose steadfast service has been a driving force behind Hong Kong’s modernity, but is also regarded as an iconic landmark of the locality and collective memory of the community.

The unique CLP clock tower was named a Grade 1 historic building in 2018 and has since been turned into a cultural hub featuring multimedia and interactive exhibitions and a wide range of creative programmes and activities for the public to enjoy.

The clock tower also houses the permanent headquarters of The Hong Kong Heritage Project - a non-profit organisation founded by Sir Michael Kadoorie to preserve history and promote heritage awareness in Hong Kong.

CLP Clock Tower – A magnificent landmark that rose from a barren landscape

In 1932, CLP bought a plot of land on the southern side of Kadoorie Hill to build their much-needed new headquarters and accommodate an expanding workforce. Site preparation and construction began in 1938, and the standalone CLP clock tower was completed in 1940 to serve as the headquarters of the electric company. The magnificent appearance of the building immediately made it an iconic landmark as it stood watch over the astonishing development of urban Kowloon.

As the administrative centre of CLP, the functional building featured large open-plan general offices on the ground floor and first floor for cashiers and accounting staff. Private offices for the chief executive and other senior managers were on the second floor. The ground floor also included a sizeable showroom where the latest electrical appliances were displayed.

In 1969, the CLP clock tower was connected to two adjacent residential blocks of St George’s Mansions – which CLP acquired in 1959 and 1968 – to create an enlarged headquarters with a total office area of around 7,750 square metres.

For more than 70 years, the CLP headquarters on Argyle Street was a place where tens of thousands of power professionals worked through different eras with a common mission: To maintain a reliable supply of electricity to fuel the growth of Kowloon and the New Territories. With CLP’s meticulous planning, each unit of electricity generated played its part in Hong Kong’s growth, creating an organic system that silently converted invisible energy into visible lights and progress.

The company eventually outgrew the site and moved out of the CLP clock tower complex in 2012.

CLP Pulse – Preserving the past and embracing the transformation to a sustainable future

When CLP moved to its new headquarters in 2012, the CLP clock tower was placed under careful conservation management. Today, it has been reborn as a heritage hub and has an important new social and cultural role. It has been renamed CLP Pulse and given a new logo. The word "Pulse" symbolises the movement of electric currents, and the building’s dynamism and energy as it moves forward into a new era. These qualities are reflected in the logo which combines a drawing of Lion Rock Mountain and the infinity symbol, representing the transformation of CLP and Hong Kong over the past century and the journey to a sustainable future.
